6 Knight’s Crosses!

The Grossdeutschland Mod for CCIII remains, in my view, the pinnacle of Close Combat modding — a masterpiece of atmosphere, tension, and tactical depth. If you’re a fan of Close Combat: The Russian Front, this is the one you owe yourself to revisit.

It does require a legacy install of CCIII (I haven’t yet tested it on Cross of Iron — that experiment is coming, and I’ll update the results here once I’ve run it through its paces).

These screenshots come from deep in my archives, and they capture one of those rare, unforgettable CCIII moments: a commander pushed right to the edge of survival, racking up a frankly ridiculous haul of medals and bravery awards. Yes — I clearly put him in harm’s way. Yes — it was risky. But anyone who’s played CCIII properly knows the truth: keeping your Command Teams close to the action is transformative. Their presence boosts morale, sharpens performance, and can turn a shaky firefight into a decisive push.
(Use the Space Bar in-game to see the Command Radius — it’s more important than most players realise.)

Of course, the danger cuts both ways. Lose your commander and the whole formation can wobble. But when it works… well, the results speak for themselves. I don’t know the exact sequence of battles that earned vonB this mountain of awards — but clearly he was doing something right.
